In July 2007, I went on a relaxing one week trip to Madeira. There was ample time to soak in the sun and swim in the sea, go on a boat trip in extremely choppy waters and befriend some local cats.
Highlights included a luxurious afternoon tea on the terrace of Reid’s Palace Hotel where the signature blend was so delicious that we bought tins of it to take home with us. I can still remember the almondy flavour. We also enjoyed a sunset dinner at Doca do Cavacas, a seafood restaurant perched on the edge of the sea, which a Lisbon foodie friend had recommended. Both locations boasted breathtaking views of the sea. The exhilarating ‘toboggan ride‘ at Monte was unforgettable too. Passengers, seated in a wicker basket mounted on wooden runners, are pushed down the slope by toboggan drivers for two kilometres. Wandering around the covered Mercado dos Lavradores packed with stalls selling fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood, is highly recommended, as is going on an early morning levada walk.
Below are my favourite photos of Madeira, all taken with my phone at the time, a 2 megapixel Sony Ericsson K750.
