Travel Packing – On The Frog

Travel packing

Part of the fun of travelling, apart from doing endless research online, is deciding what to pack for the trip. Over the years I’ve tried, with varying degrees of success, to reduce the amount of luggage I take with me and I admire my friend who manage to pack a whole week’s worth of belongings into just a large carry-on. So I’m constantly on the lookout for useful and compact travel packing products that take up little space and weight. Toiletries in particular weigh a lot, so I either decant my favourite products into plastic Muji bottles and jars or I save travel-sized samples. Here are a few travel essentials that are definitely coming with me to New York next week for a one week trip:

  • Herb Lester – the paper maps are beautifully designed, thoroughly researched and full of quirky suggestions to see, do and eat. Although I used to live in New York, there’s still so much I don’t know about the city, so I’ll take these with me for inspiration
  • Yojiya – the beauty product company was founded in Kyoto, Japan in 1904 and is most famous for its aburatorigami or facial oil blotting paper, popular with stage and screen actors as well as ladies working in the pleasure districts. I also recommend their wonderful yuzu lip balm
  • Peppersmith – a small British company that makes high quality chewing gum and mints, free from artificial flavours, colours, preservatives and aspartame. I’m not so sure about the upcoming fish and chips flavour but I do like my favourite peppermint one, as well as the mints
  • Le Labo – I bought the 15ml size of Tubereuse 40 on Elizabeth Street last year and still have so much of it left. Ironically, it’s going back to New York with me. I also have sample sizes of other favourites including Neroli 36. The vintage metal travel tube version (10ml) is desirable but rather costly at £95…
  • Aesop – as I’ve been using Aesop for years, I need my products with me when I travel. I decant them into my Jet Set Kit bottles and I save all the samples I’m given to take on trips. High on my Christmas wishlist is the London kit, which contains all the Jet Set as well as selected Parsley Seed products
  • C.O. Bigelow – as a lip balm addict, I’ve tried many brands and am currently using a few from C.O. Bigelow. Weirdly, I’m going to be staying about a minute away from the apothecary, (which opened in 1838, making it America’s oldest), so I’ll be stocking up on more

What’s in your suitcase when you travel? Do share your tips!
